Understanding Glass Art: Blown, Fused, and Stained Glass
Three distinct glass techniques with very different processes and heat requirements, and the real safety fundamentals behind working with molten and cut glass.

"Glass art" covers several genuinely different crafts that share a material but almost nothing else about how they're practiced — it's worth understanding the difference before assuming any two glass artists work the same way.
Blown glass (hot glass)
Molten glass, kept workable at roughly 2,000°F in a furnace, is gathered on a blowpipe and shaped by blowing, gravity, and hand tools while it's hot. This is what most people picture when they think of glassblowing, and it requires a specialized hot shop — a furnace, glory hole (reheating chamber), and annealer (a slow-cooling oven that relieves internal stress in the finished piece) — that most beginners access through a studio rather than owning themselves.
Fused and kiln-formed glass
Cut or layered pieces of glass are arranged cold, then fired in a kiln (typically 1,300–1,500°F) until they melt together ("fuse") or slump into a mold. Kiln-formed work is generally more accessible to beginners than hot-shop blowing, since the glass isn't handled while molten.
Stained glass
Colored glass is cut to pattern, then joined using either lead came (traditional window technique) or copper foil and solder (the Tiffany technique, more common for smaller decorative pieces). No furnace or kiln heat is required for assembly, though a soldering iron is.
Safety
Hot glass work involves furnace and glory-hole temperatures around 2,000°F and is not something to attempt without hands-on training in a proper studio — burns from radiant heat and direct contact are a real, immediate risk. Cutting glass for stained-glass or fused work produces sharp edges and glass dust; wear cut-resistant gloves when handling raw edges and eye protection when cutting or grinding, and work in a ventilated space when soldering (flux fumes) or kiln-firing.
