Understanding Woodworking: Tools, Techniques, and Getting Started
The core hand and power tools behind most woodworking, common joinery methods, and the machine-safety basics anyone starting out needs to know.

Woodworking covers an unusually wide range of practices, from turning a bowl on a lathe to building a dovetailed cabinet by hand — but most of it shares a common set of tools and a few foundational techniques worth understanding before picking a specialty.
Hand tools vs. power tools
Hand-tool woodworking (chisels, hand planes, hand saws) offers more control and quiet, precise work at the cost of speed. Power tools (table saws, routers, planers, lathes) do the same jobs far faster but introduce much higher injury risk if used without proper training and guards. Most working woodworkers use both, choosing hand tools for fine joinery and detail work and power tools for milling and repetitive cuts.
Common joinery methods
- Dovetail joints — interlocking wedge-shaped fingers, prized for strength and as a mark of hand-cut craftsmanship.
- Mortise-and-tenon — a projecting tongue (tenon) fits into a matching cavity (mortise); one of the oldest and strongest wood joints.
- Pocket-hole joinery — angled screws driven through a drilled pocket; fast and strong, common in furniture and cabinetry production.
- Biscuit and dowel joints — small wood or plastic connectors reinforce a glued edge joint, common for panel and tabletop assembly.
Safety
Table saws, jointers, planers, and lathes cause serious injuries when used without proper guards, push sticks, eye/ear protection, and training. OSHA's woodworking standards exist because these machines are genuinely dangerous, not because of excess caution. Do not operate power woodworking machinery without hands-on instruction from an experienced woodworker, and always follow the manufacturer's safety documentation for your specific tools.
Getting started
A woodworking club or guild — several operate in the Hampton Roads region — is usually the most direct way to get hands-on instruction and access to shared shop equipment before investing in your own tools. Community education programs and maker spaces are another common entry point.
